Matt Dixon  00:00

I'm Matt Dixon and welcome to the Purple Patch podcast. The mission of Purple Patch is to empower and educate every human being to reach their athletic potential. Through the lens of athletic potential, you reach your human potential. The purpose of this podcast is to help time-starved people everywhere, integrate sport into life.

Matt Dixon  00:20

All right, guys, just before we get going with the show, I want to give you a little bit of dirty promotion for you. Because today's show is all about gratitude. And one thing that we're really thankful for is our partnership with InsideTracker. We've helped so many athletes and fitness enthusiasts narrow down their focus and ensure that they can find their best path to better performance. And right now InsideTracker is doing something really special for you the purple patch audience, in fact, they are doing that thing that they call in America Black Friday, and it seems to spread all over the world. But from today, through Wednesday, November the 38th, all purple patch members and audience can get $200 off their ultimate package. That is a great saving. But it goes beyond that. You can actually get 34% Yes, that's 34% off everything at the store. Goodness me, I have never seen them do something like this. So I thought, You know what, I'm going to bubble it up. How can you participate? Well, you don't need to be a purple patch athlete to participate, all you need to do is enjoy the show. And you can head to the URL. It's the regular insight tracker.com/purple patch insidetracker.com/purple patch. This is where things get tricky. We have got a new code just for this campaign. It is purple patch-B-F-34-I-A. Who came up with that? Yes, purple patch B-F as in Black Friday, 34 as in 34% off everything in the store, and I-A as in inner age because as a part of this promotion, you can get a free inner age consultation and assessment. So there it is, purple patch B-F-3-4-I-A. Head to insidetracker.com/purplepatch. And you can get 34% off everything at the store. It is a cracking opportunity, and is also a really good time to take a look inside. And so I hope you enjoy today. It is all about gratitude. It's a short one, but it's an important one. And you'll even get a chance to shape the future of the show, the purple patch podcast, I hope you enjoy.

Matt Dixon  02:38

And welcome to the Purple Patch podcast as ever, your host, Matt Dixon, and this week, guys, we're kind of taking a week off the full podcast, we need to give ourselves a breather, not least Barry, he works his fingers to the bone he does. He works his fingers to the bone. Yes, it is U.S. Thanksgiving and so I just wanted to take this opportunity for really two main things. The first is to do a little bit of reflection over 2022 and highlight a few of the things and the people that we're really thankful for. And also, where we're going to begin today is look ahead a little bit what looms for this show the Purple Patch podcast, what have we got coming up. And I'm also going to request your help in ensuring that we can evolve so that we don't die and make it the very best, most valuable, insightful educational show and performance that we can possibly achieve. And so let's get going with the second part of that.

Matt Dixon  03:33

I want to look ahead a little bit because we are now almost 250 episodes into the show. 250 episodes. Almost every single week, over the last few years, we've had more than 6 million listens. That's a lot of ears, listening to me, go on and on and on all about performance. We've been really lucky. We've had some wonderful guests. We've covered lots of topics, provided a lot of great insights. But the question is what now? More than any other time on the show, I find myself asking that question. Where should we go with the show? What should we do with this podcast? How should we develop? As we like to say a Purple Patch, we must evolve or die. And so let me ground myself a little bit here. I see this show as a podcast about performance. And we'd like to talk about triathlon because that's our DNA as a coaching company. We primarily, although certainly not exclusively, but primarily grew up coaching triathletes, and it's from the very best athletes in the world all the way through to people that are just contemplating thinking could I ever get to the finish of that race line. But beyond that, it's also a show that aims to provide education and insight, and perspective that would help any performance-minded individual ultimately improve their performance. And when we began this show, which was out of my bedroom closet, literally out of my bedroom closet, that was, because that was the only place that was really quiet and had actually pretty good acoustics with all of my clothes wrapped around me. But when we started this, it was more of a passion project than anything else. It was, hey, let's start this, maybe it'll be useful, maybe it'll be a little bit of fun as an add-on to Purple Patch. But from those very humble beginnings, now, as I sit here in this production facility, it's grown to have a really dedicated and engaged audience that you guys. And we feel like it's appropriate, and important that now we aim to evolve a little bit, we seek to improve. And we're currently going through a little bit of a whiteboarding process, really creative, every idea is a good idea. Let's throw it down. Let's filter it. And let's really make a targeted focus to improve the show. To help you ultimately improve your performance. That's what we're looking to do. It doesn't matter whether you're seeking to become a professional athlete, or you're just seeking better health and energy in your life. So some of the things that I can throw out today that we're aiming to do is, firstly, expand the curriculum a lot. We want to really deliver deeper education on a range of topics. On one half really anchored around sports performance and training methodology, on the other side, we want to have deep curriculums around your life and work performance, as well as what we might call even special populations, the mature athlete, the perimenopausal female or whatever it might be. We also welcome to really expand our guest lists. I like to pontificate a lot, I provide my unique perspective, perhaps, but we have some really high-value experts that we can get our grubby hands on. In fact, over the coming weeks, we've got Lauren Fleshman. Joining us, many of you guys will know Lauren, as yes, the partner of Purple Patch pro, Jesse Thomas, but in her own right is a wonderful leader for female athletes and development of that side of sport. So I'm looking forward to having a very deep and meaningful conversation are about Lauren with her new book that's upcoming. We've also got a world expert in female physiology coming in to talk about perimenopause and female athletes. And we want to develop some curriculum-based sessions for coaches and for athletes so that all of you can refine your process of training, and so much more. So we really want to aim to go deeper, and have some really fruitful conversations. To help with this, we're actually really excited to add to the team a little bit.

Matt Dixon  07:42

Right now, it's sort of me and myself and who I know and what I know, and bringing into the best of my ability. But I think that by introducing more people into the team, we can get a clearer message, even more, cutting edge. And so we're really looking for one or two research assistants to join me here. If you love research around all aspects of performance, and then there might be a spot for you on the Purple Patch team. Now we're looking to have one or two people who are really passionate and detail-focused about digging into the latest trends, opinions, and of course, peer-reviewed research. So that those research assistants can help me filter through some of the blizzard of nonsense out there and deliver actionable insights. So that you can simplify your performance journey, but actually optimize it as well. There's really suited as a position to be a paid internship. But I will say that whoever comes on board has a wonderful opportunity to extend that into full employment if you are the right candidate. So I'm really excited to expand this out, we've put a link in the show notes. But also you can just head to Purple Patch fitness.com. And if you're interested or you know someone that might be interested, perhaps you're in grad school, and you're looking for some additional income, you'd like to have an opportunity to work directly with me, and then head down to the career section of the website right at the bottom down there. And you can get on board with the team is all the information there. By the way, I should note we're also hiring coaches, we're looking for an operations lead. There's quite a few interesting team opportunities for Purple Patch if you're interested in feel like you have the right candidacy.

Matt Dixon  09:24

Now, there's also a few other options that we're toying with some recommendations, some requests that we've had that come in over the last few months. And so I thought I'd share two or three of them right now and see how they sit with you see whether they spark any interest for you. The first idea that came in and we've had several people ask us for this with this Show is to create a snackable version of the show. So something that is almost a highlight reel that really delivers the one to three quick punch quick lessons that we get out of any deeper education. It will probably last somewhere between 10 and 20 minutes, and it will be the same version of the show, just compact into the key takeaways to go through is that something that you would be interested in something that you would want to listen to? For folks that don't have 40 or 50 minutes to actually really give to a full episode, they can at least get, let's call it the cliff note version of it. And I think it's within our capacity to actually do that. If the question is, is it something that you would find valuable? The second request that we've had is to build out some deeper features and applied education for those that really want to take their education to the next level. Many folks have asked for some version of a community or roundtables, live sessions, maybe curriculum-based video education, that they can get maybe behind a paywall that they can provide a small fee for, so that you can go beyond the podcast. You might not necessarily want to be coached by Purple Patch but you want to leverage some of the deeper education. Let me give you an example. We do a curriculum, that's a hybrid of live and on-demand sessions, both written and video-based, that can take you through the process of coaching some of the lessons that I've learned on how to manage a time-starved athlete, for example. Or perhaps we do a very narrow curriculum around the female athlete that's navigating menopause. And we bring in experts into a paid education curriculum. Is there interest for you guys to have something like that? We've had several requests for it. But is there a sea level interest? I'd love to know. If you want to provide us with some feedback, or insights or other recommendations. Would you like to pay a small fee for some of the education and the content that we provide? And finally, a lot of folks have asked for a little bit of an expansion of the video version of this show. Love to have a video podcast that includes slides and graphics that really take the education to a deeper level, something visual to go along with my spoken word or whoever is contributing to the lessons of the day. So those things this is now your chance, those are just three ideas.

Matt Dixon  12:14

But today, as I'm being very thankful, I give you a little bit of an opportunity. Because if you have thoughts on everything that I just mentioned there or anything that you might find valuable in the show, we'd love to hear from you. In fact, you can have a hand in helping mold the future of the Purple Patch podcasts. Whether it's guests that you might recommend if you're interested in a small add-on fee per service. If you'd like to focus on the video podcast, would you like that stackable version of the show? Any ideas that you have on how we can improve, we are all ears. Please let us know, there are two ways that you can do this, simply email us with a few bullet lists of suggestions or maybe a little bit of a response to what I just threw out there. And you just email us at info at Purple Patch fitness.com. Now to help my team if you can put podcasts in the title that's really, really helpful. And that will help us navigate all of the ideas and they will send them directly to me. Otherwise, it goes into the sea of the other support tickets that we get at Purple Patch. And the other way to do it is actually, to leave us a little bit of a voicemail where you can put some more context. If you go to the podcast page at the website, Purple Patch fitness.com. There's a lovely little icon that you just click on it on your computer or your mobile, leave us a voicemail, hey, this is Barry, I do the podcast and I've got some ideas. And then I get to listen to it. And that really provides some context. Of course, it's really nice to listen to your voice. And I'd love to know who you are, what your first name is, where you're from, et cetera. But that will be really, really helpful as well. So today, as we're being a little thankful, around you guys, our audience, I'm actually going to request that you help me here. Because while I'm being creative, really trying to take the show to the next level. One of my least favorite terms when we talk about performance, I want to take it to the next level, but I really do in this case, I want to try and provide the best education, the best insights that's both fun, interesting, but also helpful too. But in order for us to create something that's really valuable, we'd love to hear from you too. So as we're taking the week off the deep education, let me use that as an opportunity. Very thankful.

Matt Dixon  14:27

Okay, so a couple of points of reflection as I do think back. What am I and actually the Purple Patch team really thankful for? Well, the first I've got to say, Barry, this show, you are my rock, my friend. You are so steady. You are a creative. You produce this show every single week. Barry, thank you very much. I also want to highlight the Purple Patch athletes, those folks that trust us to support them on their journey. And it's fantastic. And I say that every single year, but this year, I'm going to filter out the Purple Patch athletes, all of which we are thankful for. But I want to highlight just a few. And those are what we might call our insider athletes. Those are those that the athletes that take another step up in performance, they do more, they contribute well beyond any expectations that we ever have. They lean all the way into Purple Patch and really help us make us even more special. I think you realize, as a listener, the community is so important to us at Purple Patch. It doesn't matter who you are, where you're from, your background, your level, the simple thread that unites every Purple Patch athlete is a desire to improve. And there are many Purple Patch athletes that help others on their own performance journey. They contribute beyond just improving themselves. And the community emerges from its members. The leaders, yeah they have obviously a role in shaping it, but it is the members itself that create the culture. And we are so lucky to have so many athletes that are engaged. Whether it's a team races, whether it's welcoming new athletes, supporting athletes that are struggling, when athletes have a hard time through injury or anything in life, picking them up helping them get back on the wagon, staying focused, providing perspective, helping us make the journey for everyone giving us feedback when we ask for it, or when it's needed. And that becomes really important. Participate and beyond. You guys and I'm gonna save the names because I'm fearful of forgetting someone because there's so many of you guys, but you guys that step up that go beyond, thank you so much because in many ways you guys are the focus. And I say guys generically, obviously before I get the email, the men and the women of Purple Patch that go that step above. Thank you, thank you so much, because you are the glue that really Bonds us all together on this journey.

Matt Dixon  17:05

Now, of course, driving behind this is the Purple Patch team. And this is I can say I said it last year, we've evolved, we're improved. Now, this is the best team we've ever had. They are all absolutely committed to Purple Patch athletes. But beyond that, we're all collectively and individually driven to improve. We support each other. And in the same way, we provide feedback when it's asked but also when it's needed as well. We have a team that supports all of our squad athletes across the strength squad, the running squad, the cycling squad, the triathlon squad, which obviously takes up the lion's share of our squad athletes, but we have a team who supports and works their tails off to ensure that not only is the training good, but every athlete has a Purple Patch experience. And if you don't know what the Purple Patch experience is, I recommend that you start finding out. We have a coaching team who support each other, works for each other, hold each other to account, and is singularly focused on making the athlete experience and performance level the best that very can be. And over the course of this year, we've had several team members who like some of our athletes have absolutely stepped up and gone beyond. We've got a great team. I'm thankful for all of them. But this year, Tiger, Adam, Brad, boom, you feel my heartbeat. Thank you from Kelli and I and the whole of the rest of Purple Patch team. You guys have gone above and beyond. I want to say thank you to our advisors and our support team, Kelli and I, we need mentors, we need help, we need outside perspective. And we get some of the most valuable and expert advice we possibly could. Michael, Carmel, Michael, second, the second Michael, I should add, and many, many more. Thank you so much. So many folks hold Kelli and I and the whole team to account, provide advice, counsel support, and drive us forward and it is highly appreciated.

Matt Dixon  19:02

And finally, you guys, Yes, you. Thank you. Thank you for showing up engaging and making this really, really fun. I really hope that you find this show insightful, enjoyable to listen to, helpful in your own performance journey. And the one thing that I can commit to is that we will continue to work our tails off to keep bringing the very best insights that we can, hopefully, all of them actionable insights, because we are up against a host of shows that have huge budgets and big teams, but we believe in ourselves. We believe what we offer. We believe in our expertise and we care and we are invested. And so thank you for being a part of this journey. I hope that you Have a super holiday. As mentioned, we would really, really benefit and be even more thankful for you. If you can give us some feedback. Very simple. I'm not gonna dump a survey on you. Just ping us at the Purple Patch podcast page or info@purplepatchfitness.com. And let us know what you'd like, Would you like a small fee per service so that we can really go deep? Would you like us to build out the video pod? Shall we create a snackable version? It's all up for grabs. And of course, if you have any ideas on extra guests that you would like, and then, of course, we would love to listen and hear. And so in the U.S. have a super holiday over the course of Thanksgiving. And wherever you are in the world, I hope that you will do something this week. That will bring you a little perspective and joy. And that is take a pause, reflect. What are you thankful for? I bet it turns out, there's plenty. All right guys, back to regular programming next week. But in the meantime, stay healthy. See you next time. Cheers.
